DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION

       

District of Nicobar came into existence on 1st of August , 1974. Before this, it was a part  of  District of Andamans. It is headed by DEPUTY COMMISSIONER stationed at Car Nicobar. The District is having 2 sub-divisions viz. Car Nicobar and Nancowry. The second  sub-division has jurisdiction over all islands of the district except Car Nicobar. However, for smooth functioning of the administration, it is divided into three circles under the supervision and control of Assistant Commissioners who work directly under Deputy Commissioner.

 All the Assistant Commissioners are Executive Magistrate in the area of their jurisdiction. They are assisted by Tehsildars, BDO's, Extension Officers and Village level workers. They are also the in-charge of departments like Supply, Shipping, Transport etc. in addition to Revenue, Development & Law and order in area of their jurisdiction.

The district has been designated as Integrated Tribal District. Deputy Commissioner is the Ex Officio Chairman of Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA). The various Poverty Alleviation programme sponsored by Ministry Of Rural development is being implemented through District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), which is also headed by Deputy Commissioner. Deputy Commissioner is also the District Magistrate and District Collector of the district.

The district has been notified as a Police district only in the year 1991. Superintendent of Police has been posted here who assists the Deputy Commissioner in maintaining Law and Order. The details of Superintendent of Police is given below.

The provisions of Protection of Aboriginal Tribes  (Regulation), 1956,which restricts the entry of any outsider in the tribal area of the district and  which also regulates the trade in the district, are being implemented by the District Administration.
